Notes about a tale.

I have just read “The naughty boy” by Hans Christian Andersen. It is a 5-minute reading if done slowly. It is a well written short story, and the metaphor used to describe passion is clever.

Reading those lines is noticed the difference between love and passion, totally different feelings. The idea of love is drawn in the Old Poet, who is experienced, kind, patient and respectful, qualities responsible for a mature, honest, and lasting feeling. On the other hand, the Cupid is characterized as unpredictable, intense but selfish, fancy, and uncontrollable.

Bearing this in mind, it is tangible that what each one has to offer defines their personalities. The Old Poet opens his home, gives the best for his guest, warm him, offers his kindness and solidarity. Whereas Cupid, recovering his energy, focuses only on showing what he can do with his bow and arrow. In other words, he is extravagant and ungrateful.

To recapitulate, the way that is delineated the characters’ personalities and behaviours, may be understood as metaphors for love and passion. It is almost an organic feeling the latter, which its demand needs to be satiated. In contrast, the first is intense as well, but sensible. It is a strong feeling based on both individuals. It is a feeling that requires solidarity, respect, and honest exchange.
